In celebration of its 50th anniversary, Tacoma Community College (TCC) hosted the 2015 scholarship ceremony in the presence of various guests, including financial supporters and presenters on the 20th of October.

Joseph Shim and Eun-young Seo were chosen as this year’s recipients of the Korean Endowed Scholarship, and were each awarded $1,500. Shim currently majors in engineering at the college, while Seo is taking nursing courses in order to transfer into the nursing school at the University of Washington.

Kim Kyung-Sook and Sulja Warnick, the board directors of the Korean Women’s Association, were invited to the ceremony and encouraged the two students to continue with their studies to pursue their dreams and become a global leaders for the future.

It was the $25,000 donation to TCC initially raised by the joint effort of the Korean Women’s Association and the local Korean community in 1995 that made it possible for the college to grant scholarships to Korean students for 20 years to this day.

While acknowledging the importance of having an internal scholarship program within the Korean community with the aid of local Korean organizations, the idea that encouraging younger generations through support from American mainstream society will be of great help was what ultimately led to the fundraising. The Korean Women’s Association also has its own scholarship program and awards one student every year.

As 2 students are chosen each year, a total of approximately 40 students have been awarded the scholarship from the donations made to TCC. “$25,000 was raised during the original fundraising, and it has now accumulated to a staggering $45,000”, says Kim.

Warnick added, “The fact that not only has the scholarship fund nearly doubled, but that the total number of recipients has reached about 40 students is a prime example to show the positive effects made possible by the donations from the Korean community”.
