Kim, Choi, and Silver from WA chosen as recipients for the 2015 YoungArts Award

Three Korean students currently enrolled at Bellevue Senior High School have been chosen among the 2015 YoungArts Winners.

The National YoungArts Foundation announced its 2015 winners, from a pool of participants from all across the nation. Min Jung Kim (pictured on the left), Yoon Jung Choi (pictured on the right), and Erica Silver (Korean name: Jaeyeon Lee) of Bellevue Senior High School have been selected to participate in the National YoungArts Week next year.

A non-profit organization founded in 1981 to discover the next generation of American artists, the National YoungArts Foundation has discovered many exceptional students and assisted them in becoming professional artists in the field of literature, design, music, choreography, theater and fine arts.

Every year, over 10,000 high school students hoping to pursue or major in various art fields participate in this event, and about 800 contestants receive the title of “Finalist”, “Honorable Mention”, and “Merit”.

The winners of the contest will receive scholarships, and will participate in National YoungArts Week in Miami, New York, or Los Angeles where they can take courses or get trained by professionals in the art field.

Over 20,000 artists have been discovered through this program, including singer-songwriter Josh Groban. Recipients of the award will have the opportunity to get trained by world-renowned artists from various fields, such as Plácido Domingo, Robert Redford, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Bruce Weber, and Zaha Hadid; all of whom are past “master teachers” of this program and trained aspiring young artists.

This year, a total of 12,000 contestants participated in the event and 819 of them from 42 states were chosen as recipients of the award.

Minjung Kim was also selected as a finalist for Johsel Namkung Scholarship earlier this year by the Korean American Artist Association of Washington State (KAAW), as well as from numerous other contests. Yoonjung Choi, who is also a recipient of Johsel Namkung Scholarship, received the Gold Key Award by Scholastic Art Awards 2015.
