Shari Song lectured on January 16th at Savery Hall at the University of Washington for the Korean journalism club ‘SAY’ (Society Awakened by the Young). Song acts as a liaison between the Korean community and mainstream society.

SAY is a club for Korean students at the UW majoring in journalism or communications who are pursuing a career in media or public relations.

Saehee Hong, the president, and six board members have led SAY since last year. Students learn how to write articles in Korean and English, and to record videos through an internship at a Korean newspaper in Seattle.

Song used to teach as a native English speaker and as a business magazine reporter in the 1980s in Korea. In the lecture, Song gave students advice to write articles “in an active and positive voice rather than a passive and negative voice” and to “use brief sentences, choose vigorous words, and to start with a short first paragraph”.

“Journalists should organize, clarify, and make the truth out of collected information”, Song said. “Help to brighten the future of the press”, Song said at the end of lecture.

Producer In-Bong Lee introduced several pieces of video recording equipment. “It has become easy to record and edit video,“ he said, “yet, I would like to emphasize that our challenge is to appeal to our audience.”
