The film “Northern Limit Line” and "Second Battle of Yeonpyeong"

There are a lot of films that are based on real events. One famous event in Korean history, the “Second Battle of Yeonpyeong” was made into a film with the title “Northern Limit Line” and released in June 24, 2015 in Korea. Because of its historical importance, this film was also released in the United States in July 17, 2015.

The “Second Battle of Yeonpyeong” was a military collision between North and South Korea around the Northern limit line near Yeonpyeong Island in the Yellow Sea in June 29, 2002. The North Korean navy suddenly crossed the border and attacked the South Korean navy. As a result, 6 marines died and 19 were injured and the South's patrol boat, Cham-su-ri 357 sank during tow. Not only the South but also a North Korean patrol boat suffered damage and casualties. This battle was crucial for both the North and South Korean navy.

The film “Northern Limit Line” by director Kim Hak-soon brought huge attention to Korea when it was released because it reinterpreted an important historical event. Because it was a film, the director added several elements for the film to deliver what happened in the Northern limit line during the battle. No Korean citizen saw what actually happened during the battle. Therefore, the director collected data and interviewed the marines who were in the battle, and based on the data, he made this film so that this film can deliver the historical importance to Koreans. In South Korea, 2002 was a high water year because the 2002 FIFA World cup took place in South Korea and Japan. While South Korean citizens and marines in Northern Limit Line go wild for World cup, the North Korean navy attacked South Korea. Because the World Cup was such a hot issue, people could not fully pay attention to Second Battle of Yeonpyeong even though it was a huge tragedy in South Korea history. The director wanted people to remember and cherish the South Korean marines who fought courageously against North Korea and protected South Korean citizens.
