The UW offers teaching courses in Korean funded by the Department of Defense

StarTalk is receiving applications for its summer program this year.

The StarTalk program has been established in 1996 jointly by the United States Department of Defense (DoD) and the National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland to train certified teachers of foreign languages, and to provide excellent language programs for students across the nation.

The program has been offering courses in Chinese, Arabic, Russian, and etc. for many years, and Korean has been newly added to the program last year, with Seattle offering one of the training locations.

The cost for the entire program amounts to approximately $4,000, but funds by the DoD will waive most of the training cost. Each participant will receive a certificate of authentication upon completing the program, and will obtain a teaching certificate in Korean for public schools after passing Washington Educator Skills Tests (WEST-B and WEST-E) and American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL)

As well as providing funds for the 3-week program, the DoD will provide scholarships for those who need financial assistance until they receive their teaching certificate.

The University of Washington successfully secured grants for the program last year, and will offer the program for a second consecutive year. UW faculty and former instructor of the program Professor Julie Kang stated, “This year’s participants will have the opportunity to take a 5-credit course offered by the Department of Education at the University of Washington”.

Participants will take 10 hours of online course starting from June 20th prior to the 3-week long program that starts on July 6th. Classes will be held every day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, where participants will actively engage in teaching lessons.

Dr. Kang, who secured grants for this year’s StarTalk program at the University of Washington, stated that many teachers from various local Korean schools have shown interest. Applications must be submitted online by April 8th.
