Police say four people are dead and seven others injured after a head-on crash between a minivan and truck on Highway 30 Friday morning.

Investigators say it appears the driver of the minivan -- which had eight people inside -- was traveling westbound on the Highway when they tried to turn left onto Clifton Road in the path of an oncoming Ford F-450 pickup towing an empty horse trailer.

Four of the people in the Honda minivan died. Three of the injured were taken by Life Flight to Portland hospitals, and one was taken by an ambulance to a local hospital.

Two women and a 1-month-old baby were in the pickup. They were also taken by ambulance to local hospitals. They are expected to be OK.

The conditions of the other four injured people weren't known Friday evening. The names of those who died have not been released. Investigators are expected to release that information Saturday.

Highway 30 was closed in both directions about 14 miles west of Clatskanie at milepost 76 for several hours, but is back open.
