The Korean Community Service Center held a briefing session at the Senior Citizens Association in Snohomish.
"Voting is easy in America, even for non-English speakers."
October 29th, The Korean Community Service Center (Chief Joo-mi Kim) held an information session to inform the seniors on how to vote in the United States. Korean seniors that attended this session regretted in unison that they haven't been doing something that was as easy as this.
The service center, along with ACRS (Asian Counseling and Referral Service) hosted this briefing session to encourage Asian-Pacific Islander citizens to participate in voting.
The head of the service center, Joo-mi Kim had received fervent responses from the seniors by bringing the actual ballot and going through the voting process one-by-one.
In the United States, the best way that one can voice in their ethnic group is to participate in voting.
However, Korean-Americans refuse to participate in voting because they assume that their English is insufficient. Many are not even registered voters. Looking at the past election results, even though the Korean population in Federal Way is over 10,000 people, less than 500 people are voting.
Chief Joo-mi Kim emphasized, "In America, one only needs to register once to become a part of the electorate. Afterwards, the ballot will automatically be sent to one's house." She also added that, "When one receives the ballot, it is unnecessary to vote for all items, and one may vote for just the candidate or the bill one desires to see elected or passed in time."
Particularly, in King County, with an effort by KAC-WA (President Joon-woo Lee), there will be an election guide book in Korean starting next year.
