The United Seattle Korean School, teaching the Korean language and Korean culture every Saturday, is finally accredited as a regular school. It is the first ever weekend-class Korean school that has received official accreditation of being an official school.

Dr. Kang, the president of the United Seattle Korean School said, “AdvanceED was done with reviewing the qualification procedure of the School and finally it is qualified.” AdvancED is the largest non-profit school accrediting organization, with an evaluation system that is used to help plan improvement points for the quality of schools.

Dr. Kang explained the United Seattle Korean School was qualified to receive the educational grants given from the State of Washington. Dr. Kang, a director of Professional Learning at the University of Washington, is a commissioner on the Transitional Bilingual Instructional Program (TBIP), designed by the State of Washington. She also operates the UW Korean 101 program that offers UW credit to students who take Korean classes from certified teachers of United Seattle Korean School.

Dr. Kang said, “The Seattle campus is accredited as an official school related to ‘Korean special education’. So we will do our best on the Bellevue campus to receive the school accreditation as well so that classes taken at the United Seattle and Bellevue Korean schools can be recognized as official credits.”

Meanwhile, the United Seattle and Bellevue Korean schools held a workshop in Everett at the ‘Inn at Port Gardner’, discussing effective Korean education and reviewing the history of the United Seattle and Bellevue and Korean school. Byun Jong-hye and Yoon Bu-won, directors of the United Korean School, joined the workshop. They stated, “The United Korean School was born with the idea that Korean churches should teach religious education, and the United Korean School teach culture and language.”

This year marks 19th year of the United Korean schools. It is the largest Korean school in the United States with over 600 students.

President Lee from the Bellevue campus said, “Our teachers are very dedicated to teach the Korean language and culture to Koreans who were born in the United States”.
